Thin ceramic (TiN, CN) layers for cutting materials (WC-Co) were applied by PVD (pressure vapor deposition)
Acoustic emission (AE) was monitored to evaluate the temperature effects (up to about 500 °C) on intact and damaged specimens.
Specimens were heated locally through a soldering gun. During cooling down phase AE was detected.
AE signals most probably related to damage were discerned through filtering criteria with the idea of possibly using pattern recognition for signal analysis.
